Are you thinking about buying a quad, or do you want to know which driving licence you need to ride one legally? In the Netherlands, the rules depend on how your quad is classified and what you intend to use it for. Below, we explain clearly which licence applies to each situation.
There are different types of quads, and each has specific licence requirements. Always check how your quad is registered (for example, as a moped, passenger car or agricultural vehicle).
For a quad that’s approved as a moped (note: these registrations are no longer issued for quads), you need a moped licence (AM licence).
With an AM licence, you can ride a moped quad up to a maximum speed of 45 km/h.
Some older quads were classified as three-wheeled motor vehicles. These registrations are also no longer issued today. If you have such a quad, you’ll need one of the following licences:
Licence A (motorcycle)
Licence A with code 80
Licence B (car) if you obtained it before 19 January 2013
Important: If you got your licence B after 19 January 2013, you’re not allowed to ride this type of quad unless you also have licence A.
Most modern, heavier quads are registered as passenger cars. To ride these, you need a licence B (car licence).
With licence B, you can drive quads that have a number plate and lighting that meet the passenger car regulations.
Do you use the quad in agriculture or forestry, and is it approved as such? Then you need a T licence (tractor licence).
A quad with a T registration is considered an agricultural vehicle. Since 1 July 2015, a T licence has been mandatory.
Some quads are classified as motor vehicles with limited speed. In this case as well, you’ll need a T licence.
Do you want to ride a quad that’s not approved for use on public roads? For example, on private property, a motocross track, or an enclosed area?
Then:
✅ You don’t need a driving licence.
❗ However, you are not allowed to drive it on public roads.
Type of quad | Required licence |
---|---|
Moped quad | AM |
Three-wheeled motor vehicle (old) | A, A with code 80, or B (issued before 19-1-2013) |
Passenger car | B |
Agricultural tractor | T |
Motor vehicle with limited speed | T |
Not approved for public roads | No licence required |
Tip: Always check your registration certificate or consult your dealer to be sure. This will help you avoid fines and ensure you drive safely and legally.
