Winter is approaching, which means motorcycles, quad bikes and side-by-sides (SSVs/UTVs) need extra attention. Low temperatures, moisture and prolonged periods of inactivity can lead to starting problems, rust and wear. That's why it's important to prepare your motorcycle for winter and make sure your quad bike or SSV is ready for the colder months too.

In this blog, Powersportcenter shares eight practical maintenance tips. You'll discover which tasks you can carry out yourself and when it's best to seek professional assistance.

Why is winter maintenance important?

When a motorcycle, quad bike or SSV is left unused for an extended period, various components remain vulnerable to external conditions. The battery can gradually discharge, accumulated dirt and moisture can cause corrosion, and fuel can deteriorate during long-term storage.

Regular maintenance and a suitable storage location help minimise these risks. Vehicles that are also used during winter need particular attention due to mud, moisture and possible exposure to road salt.

Preparing your motorcycle, quad bike or SSV for winter: 8 practical tips

Whether you continue riding your vehicle throughout winter or store it for an extended period, proper maintenance is essential. Some checks are easy to carry out yourself, while other tasks are best left to a specialist.

The following eight maintenance tips will help you prepare your motorcycle, quad bike or SSV for winter.

Check the battery and use a suitable trickle charger

Your battery needs extra attention during winter. When your motorcycle, quad bike or SSV is left unused for an extended period, the battery can gradually discharge. Low temperatures also reduce the available starting capacity, potentially causing starting problems.

A suitable trickle charger or battery maintainer helps keep the battery charged during winter storage. Always check that the charger is compatible with your battery type, such as a lead-acid or lithium battery. Not all chargers are suitable for both types.

Also check the battery terminals for corrosion and make sure the connections are clean and securely fitted.

Check the tyres and tyre pressures

During prolonged periods of inactivity, tyres can develop flat spots if the same area remains under constant load. The risk of deformation is particularly high when tyre pressures are too low. Tyre pressure can also drop as temperatures fall.

Before putting your vehicle into storage, check the tyre pressures and follow the values recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

Also check the tread depth and inspect the tyres for cracks, damage and other signs of wear. This will help you identify potential problems before you start riding again.

Will your motorcycle be stored for an extended period? A suitable centre stand or paddock stand can help take the weight off the tyres. For quad bikes and SSVs, it's particularly important to maintain the correct tyre pressures and store the vehicle according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Clean your vehicle and protect it against rust

Mud, sand and road salt can accumulate on the frame, wheels and other components of your motorcycle, quad bike or SSV. If this dirt is left in place for too long, it can trap moisture and cause rust and corrosion.

Thoroughly clean your vehicle before putting it into storage. Use suitable cleaning products and pay particular attention to hard-to-reach areas where dirt tends to accumulate. Allow the vehicle to dry completely afterwards.

To provide additional protection for metal components, you can use a suitable anti-corrosion spray. Avoid contact with brake discs, brake pads and tyres. This will help protect your vehicle against moisture during the colder months.

Check the chain, drivetrain and fluids

The drivetrain and fluids need extra attention before your vehicle goes into winter storage. Dirt and moisture can cause wear and corrosion, while ageing fluids may provide less protection for engine components.

Does your motorcycle have a chain drive? Check the chain tension, clean the chain and lubricate it with a suitable chain lubricant spray. Quad bikes and SSVs with shaft or belt drives have different maintenance requirements. Check these components according to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule.

Also check the engine oil level, coolant and brake fluid. If the engine oil is due for replacement, it's advisable to change it before a prolonged period of inactivity. Always use fluids that are suitable for your vehicle.

Pay attention to the fuel tank and fuel

When a motorcycle, quad bike or SSV is left unused for an extended period, petrol can deteriorate. This can lead to deposits forming in the fuel system, potentially causing problems when starting the vehicle again. In vehicles fitted with a carburettor, residual fuel deposits can interfere with fuel delivery.

Before winter storage, check which precautions the manufacturer recommends. For some vehicles, it's advisable to fill the tank with suitable, fresh fuel and add a fuel stabiliser. For others, it may be necessary to drain the carburettor.

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and the directions provided with any fuel additives. Make sure your vehicle is stored in a safe location, away from naked flames and other sources of ignition.

Check the air filter and brakes

A clean air filter and properly functioning brakes are important for your vehicle's reliability and safety. Particularly during off-road riding, dust, sand and mud can accumulate in the air filter and around the brakes.

Check the air filter for dirt and damage. Depending on the filter type, it may be possible to clean and re-oil it, or it may need replacing. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Also inspect the brake pads and brake discs for wear and check for any visible leaks. If you're unsure about the condition of the brakes, have them inspected by a mechanic before riding again.

Lubricate moving parts

In addition to the drivetrain, other moving components also require maintenance. These include pivot points, control levers and moving joints on your motorcycle, quad bike or SSV. Dirt and moisture can cause corrosion in these areas and affect how the components operate.

Inspect these components for dirt and wear. Clean them where necessary and apply a suitable lubricant to the points specified by the manufacturer. This helps moving parts continue to operate smoothly and remain better protected during prolonged periods of inactivity.

Do not use the same lubricant everywhere. Avoid contact with brake discs, brake pads, tyres and other surfaces where oil or grease could affect grip or performance.

Choose a suitable winter storage location

Suitable winter storage helps keep your motorcycle, quad bike or SSV in good condition throughout the colder months. Ideally, choose a dry, well-ventilated space where the vehicle is protected from rain, moisture and significant temperature fluctuations. A heated garage is not essential, provided the conditions are suitable for your vehicle.

If necessary, use a breathable vehicle cover to protect against dust and dirt. Avoid completely sealed plastic covers that can trap condensation, and allow the vehicle to dry thoroughly before covering it.

Also make sure the vehicle is standing securely. During long-term storage, regularly check the battery and storage conditions. Always follow the manufacturer's specific instructions, particularly regarding the battery, fuel and frost protection.
