Want to know when you are legally allowed to ride a quad bike? This depends on the type of quad, its vehicle approval, your driving licence and your age. In the Netherlands, quad bikes are divided into six categories:
1. Quad bike without road approval (private land)
A quad bike that is not approved for use on public roads may only be used on private land, such as a farmyard or enclosed property.
- No registration plate required.
- In some agricultural areas, you may be allowed to travel short distances on public roads (for example, from your farm to a field), but always check with your local municipality first.
2. Quad bike approved as a four-wheeled moped
This type of quad bike is subject to the regulations for mopeds.
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 16.
- Valid moped driving licence (category AM).
- Registration plate required.
- Third-party liability insurance required.
- Wearing a helmet is compulsory.
- Maximum speed: 45 km/h.
3. Quad bike approved as a three-wheeled motor vehicle
These are generally heavier or faster quad bikes.
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 18.
- Category A driving licence, category A with code 80, or category B driving licence (if obtained before 19 January 2013).
- Registration plate required.
- Third-party liability insurance required.
- A helmet is compulsory if the quad bike is not fitted with seat belts. If seat belts are fitted, a helmet is not required.
- Permitted to travel at speeds exceeding 60 km/h and to use expressways and motorways.
4. Quad bike approved as a passenger car
Some wider or heavier quad bikes can be registered as passenger cars.
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 18.
- Category B driving licence.
- Registration plate required.
- Third-party liability insurance required.
- Seat belts are compulsory. When seat belts are worn, a helmet is not required.
5. Quad bike approved as an agricultural or forestry tractor
A popular option for agricultural use.
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 16.
- Category T driving licence.
- Vehicle registration is compulsory, but a registration plate is not required if you travel at a maximum speed of 25 km/h.
- Third-party liability insurance required.
- Wearing a helmet is not compulsory.
- Maximum speed: 25 km/h.
6. Quad bike classified as a limited-speed motor vehicle (MMBS)
Some quad bikes are registered as limited-speed motor vehicles.
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 16.
- Category T driving licence.
- Vehicle registration is compulsory.
- No registration plate required if you travel at a maximum speed of 25 km/h.
- Third-party liability insurance required.
- Wearing a helmet is not compulsory.
