A flip-up helmet has a hinged chin bar that you can lift upwards. While riding, the chin bar sits down and gives you full-face protection, just like a full-face helmet. When you stop, you flip the chin bar up and get immediate ventilation and an open face without taking the helmet off. That is useful at a petrol stop, a payment terminal or a quick conversation.
The hinge mechanism adds some weight compared to a full-face helmet with a fixed chin bar. On modern flip-up helmets that difference is small, but it is worth considering if weight is a priority. A full-face helmet is slightly stiffer in construction because there is no hinge to account for.
ECE 22.06 is the current European safety standard for motorcycle helmets, mandatory for helmets brought to the European market after January 2024. It sets stricter requirements than its predecessor ECE 22.05: more test scenarios, better protection against oblique impacts and additional requirements for rotational forces during a crash.
For flip-up helmets there are additional requirements. The helmet must be certified in both the closed and open position. You can see this in the P/J designation on the helmet label. P stands for Protected (chin bar closed, full protection), J stands for Jet (open position). A flip-up helmet with only a P rating may not be used with the chin bar open on public roads.
Flip-up helmets are available with a fiberglass or carbon shell. Fiberglass is the standard material in the mid-range: strong, light enough for everyday use and available across a wide price range. Carbon offers greater rigidity at lower weight than fiberglass. On long rides, some riders notice that in terms of neck fatigue. Carbon shells are typically the most expensive option within any model line.
Powersportcenter ships flip-up helmets with free delivery on orders over €150 and a 30-day return window. Would you prefer to try the helmet on first? You are welcome to visit our store in Geesteren, the Netherlands. Get in touch if you have questions about sizing or which model suits you best.
