Youth motocross helmets

Buy a motocross helmet for your child based on the size they are today, not the size they will grow into. A helmet that fits properly stays in place during a crash and can do the job it was designed for. That is why we offer dedicated youth helmets from Thor and Alpinestars, in youth sizes S, M and L.

How to measure your child's helmet size

Take a soft tape measure and wrap it around your child's head, just above the eyebrows and ears. Use that measurement to find the right youth size in the chart below. Keep in mind that a youth size S is not the same as an adult size S.

Youth sizes run from about 47 to 52 centimetres, while an adult size S only starts at 55 centimetres. If your child measures 53 centimetres or more, an adult size XS will usually fit better than a youth helmet.

If your child falls right between two sizes, choose the smaller one. A motocross helmet should fit snugly, as long as it does not pinch anywhere.

Buying a size up seems smart, but it protects less

It is tempting to buy a helmet your child can grow into, because kids grow fast. We still advise against it. A helmet that is too loose can shift in a crash, and Thor states that a helmet's protection depends directly on its fit.

If you want one helmet to last longer, take a look at the Alpinestars SM3 Youth. On this model, a size M can later be converted to a size L by swapping the inner pads.

Check the fit before your child rides

Put the helmet on and fasten the chin strap. Your child should feel no pressure points around the crown, and the cheek pads should sit firmly against the cheeks. Then hold the chin bar and gently move the helmet from side to side.

If the cheeks move with the helmet, the fit is right. If the helmet slides across the face, it is too big. Repeat this check every season, because a child's head grows faster than you might expect.

Choosing between Thor and Alpinestars
